What causes psoriasis?
It is related to an issue with the immune system mistakenly attacking healthy skin cells and causing them to reproduce too rapidly. The condition causes new skin cells to reproduce and move to the surface of the skin in a matter of days, a process that normally takes several weeks. This results in a buildup of cells which cause thick, scaly patches on the skin.

Do I have psoriasis?
There are several types of psoriasis which often present themselves in different ways or in various areas of the body. However, some common symptoms of all types of psoriasis include:

  • red patches of skin
  • silvery scale-like spots
  • itching
  • burning
  • soreness
  • swollen or stiff joints
  • thickened or pitted nails
  • dry, cracked skin
  • cracked skin which bleeds

Psoriasis can occur anywhere on the body but normally crops up on the elbows or knees. The affected areas of skin may range from small scaly patches to major cases which cover large areas.
